Description

Mousehole just has to be one of my all time favourite locations, it seems to have a real atmosphere that hasn’t been lost in todays world of all things modern. I’ve painted Mousehole a few times now and I always seem to be drawn to this little corner where a row of old cottages are neatly arranged right on the quay, sometimes with boats right in front of the windows.

This particular evening was at the end of a warm summers day with no wind so the incoming tide was very calm and the setting sun behind the cottages. I didn’t have a definite plan of what I wanted as you never know in what position the boats have been left in so I rolled my trousers up and waded in looking for interesting compositions, with a boat called “Mary Jane, Mousehole” this worked out perfectly as the composition worked really well though little did I know just how difficult those reflections would be.

The reflections were a real challenge, something similar of which i’d only attempted in “Autumn Light, Chapel Porth” but with this one I wasn’t even sure how I’d paint it but just decide to work it out when I got to that part, but after lots hours I’m really pleased with its outcome and overall atmosphere which with it being in part shade due to the setting sun also added an extra degree of difficulty.

The Original is framed using Ash with a very deep bevel inner white mount and a top mount using Peterboro Conservation Glacier White mount board. Due to its size the glass used is special “Tru-View Ultra View” which has less than 1% reflection, blocks 70% of UV light and allows 98.5% light transmission.
