Suzie Marsh established a
workshop to produce sculpture in
1987. Her work is noticeable for
her skill in capturing the life and
spirit of her subject and for her
attention to detail - which will
often reveal things about an
animal which we had not
previously noticed. She has
undertaken many commissions
both at home and abroad and is
now recognised as a leader in the
field of animal sculpture. Her work
can be found in many galleries
across the country.
Suzie is currently working on a sculpture for public installation in Looe. Nelson, the one-eyed seal who took up residence in Looe Harbour became, over the next twenty years, a favourite of residents and visitors alike and a public subscription has raised funds to erect a full-sized bronze tribute to Nelson as a mark of affection for him. The statue will be mounted on Pennyland Rocks close to the harbour entrance and will be easily accessible to all by boat or on foot. It is expected that this sculpture will become an instantly recognisable symbol of Looe for the future.
Suzie’s initial sculptures are always undertaken in clay, which she finds a fluid medium for expression. This can be fired and finished in her own workshop or translated into another medium depending upon its eventual purpose. Most of her present work is finished in bronze resin, a material which is sensitive enough to reproduce every finger mark from the original work. Although this is a very modern material it is finished using the same painstaking hand methods as Suzie’s other work.
In appreciation of the role which animals have played in her success, Suzie is an enthusiastic supporter of several animal charities. The Cats Protection holds a special place in her affections and she is also a regular contributor to the Turgwe Hippo Sanctuary in Zimbabwe. Details of these, together with more information on her work, can be found on her website which we invite you to visit www.suziemarshsculpture.co.uk.
